Will we overcome unsustainability and economic collapse. Global warming can not be properly reversed if we do not employ robotic means to exponentiate solar energy collection and electrical storage.

There are many different ways to collect energy from the sun. Photovoltaic panels are a promising way to make use of all the sunny spaces above human settlement, however, in the desert, there is a way to gain twice the efficiency which consumes only about 1% of the water as needed (for cooling) in an equal amount of coal based generation. This water is used only for washing mirrors as excess heat is absorbed by the air. ***

The next step to true energy independence is being able to store the electrical energy generated by intermittant wind and solar. There are many possible ways of storing energy, such as pumped hydro, compressed air, flywheels, thermal, even by super conducting means. Only through large scale production is there a way to dramatically cut the costs of these storage schemes since physical size, weight and thermal expansion issues have mostly already been perfected.

Batteries have the potential to cut the costs of electrical storage by orders of magnitude because they have not been perfected yet. They will eventually be mass produced on utility levels far cheaper than currently imagined and last for thousands of cycles.

The LiFePO4 battery could be this electrical storage medium on this scale WHEN politics and proprietary issues can be resolved. Also known as the li-fe battery, or LFP, it is not prone to explosion and is already being made to lasts for thousands of cycles. Unlike it's similar predecessor, the li-ion, it will have no raw materials supply issues until well into the TerraWatt level.

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)

CSP works by using lots of mirrors that reflect sunlight to heat a fluid which fills a resevoir that stores that heat energy.

CSP is labor intinsive, thus millions of jobs and more secondary jobs would boost the economy.

CSP may use a lot of water for cooling which could be piped in from the ocean resulting in distilled water.

CSP can also use the air for cooling needs.***

CSP deployed on a massive scale would save about 60 times the emissions needed to create it.

Solar energy, after initial phase in, will use its own electricity to further build a green grid.

Solar energy can power an all electric vehicle fleet eliminating the need to import oil.

Solar energy can supply the world with unlimited energy, yes unlimited energy!

Solar energy will be created by the absolute necessity to overcome fossil fueled processes that accelerate a lower than normal planetary reflectivity which causes more glaciers to melt thus lowering the albedo even more, heating the oceans to a point where methane hydrate surfaces as a potent greenhouse gas that fouls the heated atmosphere whereas mostly only microscopic life on the oceans can survive to convert CO2 into yet another vast store of hydrocarbon fuel, to be seen as a cycle beset upon Intellegent species that lacks the ability to turn the vast voids between the lush vegetation into mirrors that use sunlight to generate an unlimited amount of carbonless energy and to reflect excess light back out into space toward the sun that would otherwise overheat its planet anyways

Since a good fraction (about 30%) of the sun's energy will be converted to electricity, the local heat effect will be below normal. This allows more plant growth in the deserts. However, as electrical loads dissapate back into heat after use, there will be little change on the global level. The little change in temperature that does take place on a global level is caused by (a very large amount of) mirrors that reflect the bright area next to the sun back into space. Therefore, solar technology is the only source of power that actually directly cools the planet to a certain degree. Obviously, this trivial amount of cooling is greatly exaggerated by the amount of warming NOT caused by its fossil fuels displacement.

Question One:
That's the correct definition, however, all three could be true. Complete automation of solar energy collection and energy storage is mandatory! As for crude oil, humanity has already consumed an amount the size of a football field, 20,000 miles long (about 40 cubic miles)!

Question Two:
The EIA says:
Total U.S. coal consumption was 1,121.7 million short tons (in 08).
1.1217 billion tons divided by 100 tons = 11,217,000 railroad car loads was consumed. If each is 75 feet, then that train of coal would have to be 159,000 miles long.

Question 3: We need a cheap and reliable energy storage system (demand battery research!)
Sunlight = 1,000 watts at best per square meter (10.75 sq ft).
~ 800 watts for 6 hours x 15% (~ efficiency of collection media)
= .72 kWh x 1,000,000 = 720,000 kWh per kilometer x 100,000 km = 72 billion kWh per day or 18 trillion kWh per year (with 110 cloudy days).
World electrical net is 18 trillion kWh per year.
This is about 40,000 sq mi and is a little less than the area used for roads in the USA alone!

10,000 square miles of sunshine can power all of the USA (assuming just 20% efficiency). World deserts total to about 15,000,000 sq km or about 5.8 million sq mi.

Solar thermal using mirrors and molten salt as heat storage is about 20% efficient, and the Solar dish is about 31% efficient!

Therefore, it is safe to say that solar energy can support 20 full blown present day populations...
